US Justice Department Enters Lawsuit to Stop the State of California's Congressional Map

The US Justice Department have officially joined a lawsuit brought forward by California Republicans, aiming to prevent the California's recently passed congressional redistricting map.

This court case, submitted to a US district court, challenges the map championed by the state's Democratic governor, which was created in reaction against a GOP redistricting effort in Texas.

"The state's redistricting scheme represents a brazen power grab that tramples on civil rights and mocks the electoral system," stated the nation's top law enforcement official.

The Democratic party have voiced assurance that the redistricting plan will withstand court challenges.

"The plaintiffs lost at the ballot box and soon they will face defeat in the judicial system," stated a representative for the governor.

Legal Basis

The legal challenge asserts that California's map wrongfully utilized racial considerations to significantly advantage Hispanic voters in contravention of the US Constitution.

"Race cannot be used as a proxy to advance political interests, but that is exactly what the state legislature did with the redistricting measure," argued a high-ranking representative from the Civil Rights Division.

Broader Implications

The legal battle represents the major response by the Democratic party in the ongoing redistricting war that started with Texas and has extended to various parts of the country.

In contrast to elsewhere, where GOP-controlled legislatures have implemented partisan maps, California's plan needed public consent, which it received with approximately two-thirds of the vote.

National Implications

The Democratic party need to gain just a handful of GOP-controlled House seats to gain majority of the House of Representatives in next year's congressional elections.

The party that holds the controlling share will influence the final years of the sitting president's term, determining whether a GOP-controlled legislature will continue to deliver its political program or encounter opposition, congressional probes and potential additional obstacles.
