The Iconic Puzzle Game Couldn't Succeed at The Game Awards — Another Award Type May Address This Issue

Each time a significant awards ceremony approaches, there’s always an outcry for introducing additional classifications to acknowledge underappreciated efforts and fill the passions of enthusiasts who have specialized interests.

A fellow writer has already made advocating for terror-themed awards. That would be fantastic. Equally deserving are tabletop games, representing a dedicated supporter's campaign. But they will have to forgive me when I prioritize because like all blinkered fanatics, there's a strong justification supporting my request stands as crucial and important of all. This is the request: It's essential to create a classification for brain-teasing titles.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Classifying creative works defies precise measurement; it’s very subjective, and inevitably generate discussions concluding with vague boundaries. It's understandable that movie academies steer clear of genre categories. However, it represents a necessary evil within the realm of gaming, showing incredible range they barely qualify as a single art form.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of gaming accomplishments to be recognized, while allowing diverse titles to receive proper recognition, classification by type becomes crucial.

Existing Game Classification System

Leading game ceremonies presently include award types recognizing Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these six categories actually cover many game types, allowing placement for numerous titles.

Not so for brain-teasing titles. No suitable classification appears for their placement. Consider three of outstanding current releases, each quite distinct: the architectural riddles of one title, intense tile-matching in a different title, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles in another game. What category would fit them within current classifications? Simply put, no category fits.

The Representation Problem

Numerous examples exist excellent brain-teasers launched regularly without proper recognition at major award shows, except when they manage to fit classification types such as Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, or the extremely competitive Indie races.

  • A renowned logic title wasn’t nominated for anything during that awards season
  • Another imaginative release was excluded during that ceremony
  • Well-received sorting experience received no acknowledgment recently
  • Only a few puzzle games scraped into niche award types

Importance of Logic Titles

These are often small games, but the art of the puzzle game holds tremendous importance. Famous handheld logic titles stand as most engaged experiences in the world and have been for many years.

The legendary block-stacking game competes with famous sandbox experiences competing to become most purchased experience; it also contends for top gaming experience. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks for gaming as medium, and engaging with diverse game types.

Proposal and Rationale

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter such difficulty. One could readily select five nominees engaging, different, qualified experiences annually without trouble — actually, with challenge, because you’d have to leave numerous deserving experiences.

Restating the point, these are games without proper classification in important events. Logic title developers function at the demanding boundary interactive creation, developing some of most fundamental forms of gaming itself. Similar to movie stunt professionals, they warrant appreciation. Don't make them wait 35 years.
