Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside French aircraft in a coordinated attack against an underground arms cache in Syrian territory operated by the Daesh militant organization, according to the UK's MoD.

The site, pinpointed through surveillance, was assessed as housing weapons and explosive materials, the release indicated, and was situated in hills just above the ancient city of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"The RAF jets used Paveway IV guided bombs to hit a number of access tunnels leading to the depot... preliminary assessments are that the strike was effective," officials stated.

There was no evidence of any harm to civilians in the attack on Saturday evening and each participating jet made a safe return, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon fighters were assisted by a Voyager tanker plane.

IS - alternatively referred to as the so-called Islamic State - enforced extremist governance over significant areas in Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This action demonstrates the UK's leading role, and commitment to stand shoulder to shoulder with allied nations, to stamp out any revival of the terrorist group and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the Middle East," the British Defence Secretary John Healey said.

British military aircraft have conducted patrols over Syria to "prevent any attempted resurgence" of IS subsequent to its defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I extend gratitude to every member of our armed forces involved in this mission for their expertise and their bravery," he said. "Including them were thousands of British personnel on duty over Christmas and New Year. This action, to eliminate terrorist threats who pose a risk to our safety, highlights how British military are prepared to act, all year round, ensuring Britain's security domestically and strong abroad."

In December, the United States armed forces executed what it termed a "large-scale strike" against Islamic State objectives in the country, following an attack resulted in the deaths of two American soldiers and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The U.N. says Islamic State still maintains an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 militants in Iraq and Syria.
